Individuation and the cultural matrix

This talk will attempt to stimulate curiosity about some elements of the cultural matrix that constrain a parent’s capacity to facilitate the process of individuation, or coming into being, for their child. While the term individuation means different things to different people, this already difficult task might further be complicated by some socio-political systems and structures. This talk evolved out of a paper previously published in the Journal of Analytical Psychology (JAP) in 2021. Case material will include examples of such constraints in relation to the individuation of folk with a post-colonial heritage. The hope is that in the plenary we will share thoughts about the individuation process.
